Morocco stands firm behind UAE in Gulf islands dispute with Iran

Speaking before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, Morocco voiced unwavering support for the United Arab Emirates’ sovereignty over the islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa—territories currently held by Iran.

Addressing the UN in New York, Morocco’s ambassador Omar Hilale firmly reaffirmed his country’s longstanding stance, calling it both “steadfast and consistent.” Representing the Kingdom at the international forum, Hilale reiterated Morocco’s full commitment to upholding the UAE’s territorial integrity and openly criticized Iran’s continued presence on the disputed Gulf islands.

Hilale emphasized that Morocco fully endorses the UAE’s approach to resolving the conflict through peaceful means. He backed Abu Dhabi’s calls for a diplomatic resolution—either through direct negotiations with Iran or by referring the matter to the International Court of Justice. According to Hilale, these avenues reflect the UAE’s commitment to international law and regional stability, principles that Morocco strongly supports.
