Morocco has started work on a new solar power programme that will produce 305 megawatts (MW) of electricity from six plants across five regions.
The projects move forward after the Moroccan Solar Engineering Company (Masen) signed electricity contracts with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). Masen will handle the whole process itself, from planning and paying for the plants to building and running them, through its subsidiary, Noor Atlas Energy Company.
Before construction began, Masen studied the sites, checked technical details, arranged financing, and set up the legal framework. Funding comes from Germany’s KfW bank, the European Investment Bank, and Bank of Africa. Construction work will go to Moroccan and European companies chosen through a competitive process.
The programme is expected to create local jobs, support national businesses, strengthen industry, and increase Morocco’s use of renewable energy.
