Morocco steps into the spotlight at the 2025 Dance World Cup

Morocco has officially cemented its place on the global dance stage following a powerful debut at the 2025 Dance World Cup, held in Burgos, Spain from July 3 to 12. This international event brought together young dancers from 51 countries, ranging in age from 6 to 25, across every major style—from classical ballet and contemporary to hip-hop, jazz, and urban dance, performed solo, in duos, and in larger groups.

The Moroccan national team, recently formed with exceptional care and dedication, made a strong impression at this prestigious competition. Their journey to Burgos began earlier this year during a rigorous two-day national selection process in February 2024, overseen by DWC MAROC, the country’s official qualifying body for the Dance World Cup. Over 150 young dancers from across the country vied for a spot on the team, under the leadership of qualification director Karima Lammissi and artistic director Inessa Silianova. An international jury, appointed by the Dance World Cup, judged the performances live, ensuring transparency and fairness at every step. Ultimately, 120 dancers earned the honor of representing Morocco on the world stage.

The standout moment of Morocco’s participation came when 13-year-old Camelia Squalli captured a bronze medal with a stunning performance—an historic first for the nation at the global finals. Her achievement stands as a testament to the remarkable talent and discipline that Moroccan youth are capable of bringing to the international arts scene.

From the very first day of the event, Morocco made its presence felt, participating with pride in the lively and emotional opening parade through the streets of Burgos. This festive kickoff brought together all participating countries, offering a vibrant display of culture, unity, and youthful spirit. It also gave Morocco a rare opportunity to showcase its artistic identity and celebrate its creative youth on a global platform.

Reflecting on the experience, Karima Lammissi described the national selection process as a thrilling challenge, one that revealed the extraordinary drive and talent of Moroccan children and teenagers. She praised the commitment of the families and the quality of the performances, affirming that Morocco deserves its place among the world’s top dance nations.

Artistic director Inessa Silianova echoed that sentiment, expressing admiration for the technical skill and adaptability of the young dancers. She highlighted their rapid learning curve and emotional depth—qualities she believes could take them to the top of the international dance world with the right mentorship and support.

Morocco’s participation in the 2025 Dance World Cup is more than just a competition result; it represents a broader movement to uplift performing arts as a means of cultural expression and international outreach. It also serves as a reminder that with opportunity, guidance, and dedication, Moroccan youth are ready to take their talents to the global stage.
