Morocco has clinched the top spot at the 2024 African Mathematics Olympiad, held at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 10 to 20. The Moroccan national team achieved an impressive total of 201 points, setting a new record for the highest score ever obtained in the history of the Olympiad. Following Morocco were Algeria with 186 points and Tunisia with 133 points, according to a statement from the Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports.
Moroccan students excelled in the competition, securing three gold and three silver medals across the team. Gold medals were awarded to Yacine Kamouh (42/42 points) from the Casablanca-Settat region, Adam Mahdan (35/42 points) from Souss-Massa, and Sami Moussaoui (33/42 points) from the Oriental region.
The silver medals were won by Sarah Al-Masnawi (31/42 points) from Casablanca-Settat, and both Sakina Brransi (30/42 points) and Lina Chaker (30/42 points) from Rabat-Salé-Kenitra. Notably, these three students also secured gold medals in the female category (PAMO Girls).
The event saw participation from 27 countries, each represented by a team of six students (three girls and three boys). Competitors faced two challenging exams over two consecutive days, each lasting four and a half hours.
The Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports expressed its warm congratulations to the students who brought honor to Morocco in this prestigious scientific competition. The ministry also extended its gratitude to the mentors who prepared the students for this continental event and to the families for their unwavering support.
