Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, the Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, announced on Monday in Rabat that Morocco will roll out fifth-generation (5G) cellular technology in preparation for hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The 5G rollout aims to cover 25% of Morocco’s population by 2026 and expand to 70% by 2030, with full coverage in the cities hosting the 2030 World Cup matches, according to the minister. This announcement came during a parliamentary session addressing digital services in remote and mountainous areas.

As part of the broader effort to modernize the country’s telecommunications, 6,300 public administrative buildings will be equipped with fiber-optic connectivity by 2026. Additionally, the initiative targets providing high-speed internet access to 5.6 million households by 2030.

Minister El Fallah Seghrouchni emphasized that digital services remain a priority for the growth of Morocco’s telecommunications sector. The government and private operators are working together to strengthen infrastructure and improve connectivity across urban and rural areas.

The government has partnered with telecom operators through investment agreements to support national digital transformation projects. In 2023, investments in these initiatives exceeded 8.4 billion dirhams, underscoring the country’s commitment to advancing its digital economy.

By enhancing digital access and rolling out cutting-edge technology like 5G, Morocco aims to position itself as a leader in digital innovation while ensuring readiness for the upcoming global football events.
