Morocco wins seat on UNESCO executive board, strengthening global role

Morocco has secured a seat on UNESCO’s Executive Board following a vote during the organization’s 43rd General Conference, currently underway in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Garnering 146 votes, the country will now serve a four-year term on one of UNESCO’s most influential decision-making bodies.

The Executive Board, made up of 58 member states, plays a critical role in steering UNESCO’s strategic direction. It reviews and shapes the organization’s programmatic and budgetary proposals before they go to the General Conference for final approval. Its responsibilities span across UNESCO’s key focus areas: education, culture, science, communication, and information.

Morocco’s election to the board underscores the country’s growing visibility on the international stage and affirms its long-standing commitment to the core missions of UNESCO. The move is widely seen as recognition of Morocco’s active role in advancing education, scientific development, and cultural initiatives both at home and within global frameworks.

This recognition comes on the heels of another international endorsement. UNESCO recently highlighted Morocco’s “Second Chance Schools” initiative as part of its global literacy advancement program. Managed by the Ministry of National Education, the initiative uses artificial intelligence and digital tools to help reintegrate out-of-school youth into the education system. The program was recognized alongside projects from Bangladesh and Ireland, placing Morocco among a select group of nations pioneering innovative approaches to literacy and lifelong learning.
