Morocco’s blue sectors contribute an impressive 3.8% to the nation’s GDP and account for 4.6% of employment, according to a new integrated growth index. This innovative index, developed through a technical assistance program led by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, aims to provide a comprehensive measure of the economic performance of blue sectors, including fishing, aquaculture, coastal tourism, and other maritime activities.
A joint statement from the Ministry and the World Bank (WB) highlights that this is the first time such metrics have been measured. The index offers a holistic approach to evaluating the overall economic impact while pinpointing areas that need additional support.
This technical assistance, part of the Blue Economy Development Program in partnership with the WB, also focuses on creating pilot coastal clusters in the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima and Souss Massa regions. These clusters are designed to boost local innovation and competitiveness by fostering collaboration among businesses, research institutions, and community stakeholders, thus creating dynamic ecosystems that support sustainable economic growth.
Specific infrastructure developments will support maritime businesses, encourage investment, and promote job creation in these strategic coastal regions. The integrated approach ensures economic growth while maintaining environmental and social sustainability. By promoting responsible resource exploitation and enhancing local communities’ resilience to climate change, Morocco is positioning itself as a regional leader in sustainable coastal management.
Looking ahead, the development of Morocco’s blue economy, supported by the WB, marks a significant step toward a prosperous and sustainable maritime future. By integrating innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, this program strengthens the economic competitiveness of pilot regions and paves the way for enlightened and integrated maritime resource management.
With a long-term vision, Morocco aims to maximize the socio-economic benefits of its extensive coastlines while preserving their natural wealth for future generations.
