Morocco’s grand piano competition prepares for a stunning edition !

Since its launch in March 2001, the International Music Competition of the Moroccan Philharmonic Orchestra (OPM) has become a landmark event in the global classical music scene. With each passing year, this demanding competition draws an elite class of virtuosos, all eager to display their artistry, dazzle audiences, and leave a lasting impression through performances of technical and emotional brilliance.

Aimed at nurturing accomplished young talents, the competition serves as a powerful springboard for promising musicians by offering them invaluable exposure and recognition. For audiences, it’s a rare opportunity to witness these future stars in the early stages of their rise to prominence. Yet, beyond its competitive essence, the event reflects the broader mission of the OPM: to champion universal music that transcends borders and unites diverse cultural heritages.

From February 10 to 15, 2025, the competition’s 21st edition will turn its focus to the piano, an instrument that has long reigned as a centerpiece of classical music. The semi-finals will consist of two stages designed to test both technical prowess and the ability to engage in a musical dialogue with the orchestra. Contestants will first perform a solo recital, followed by an orchestral performance, featuring works by either Beethoven or Mozart. Their task will go beyond technical precision, as they must also convey emotional depth and a seamless connection with the orchestra.

The grand finale promises an immersive journey through the rich, passionate world of the Romantic repertoire. The finalists will perform major concertos, giving them one last opportunity to distinguish themselves in front of an esteemed jury and captivated spectators. The competition will culminate in a winners’ concert, celebrating the crowned talents in an atmosphere blending formality with festivity.

What truly sets the OPM’s International Music Competition apart is its rare structure: few contests allow participants to perform with a full philharmonic orchestra as early as the semi-finals. This prestigious format transforms the event into a crucible of excellence, where both virtuosity and raw emotion come together to create unforgettable moments for jurors and audiences alike.

The 2025 edition will be guided by two artistic directors: Dina Bensaïd (semi-finals) and Pierre-Michel Durand (final). Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden, an internationally respected pianist and educator, will preside over the jury. He will be joined by a distinguished panel of musicians, including Moroccan composer Ahmed Essyad and renowned pianists Jorge Martins, Nicole Boyer Salmon, Yun Li, Ana Guijarro, and Olivier Gardon. Together, they will evaluate the competitors and select the most outstanding talents.

True to its mission of making classical music accessible to all, the Moroccan Philharmonic Orchestra, in partnership with the Foundation of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, will offer free admission to all phases of the competition. This initiative has been warmly welcomed by music lovers, who are eager to experience the full scope of this exceptional event without financial barriers.

This gesture underscores a clear vision: to democratize access to music and allow people from all walks of life to experience moments of inspiration and deep emotion alongside the rising stars of the classical world. With anticipation already building, the 21st edition promises to reinforce the OPM International Music Competition’s status as one of the most prestigious and eagerly awaited events on the global classical music calendar.
