Five years after a successful partnership with the Houphouët-Boigny National Polytechnic Institute, Morocco’s Green Energy Park is taking a bold step forward in Ivory Coast. The research and innovation center, a leader in solar energy solutions, is setting its sights on deepening its impact across Africa by actively supporting the energy transition in the region.
The ambitious move involves establishing Green Energy Park’s first-ever international subsidiary in Abidjan. Created through a collaboration between Morocco’s Institute for Research in Solar Energy and Renewable Energies (IRESEN), the OCP Group, and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, this new branch is designed to guide both public and private stakeholders in Ivory Coast on solar-based energy efficiency projects.
More than just providing technical support, the Abidjan subsidiary will mirror the original center’s model, offering applied research programs and hands-on training. This initiative aims to empower Ivorian students, doctoral candidates, and researchers through a direct transfer of expertise. By doing so, the project strengthens South-South cooperation in renewable energy development.
Since its inception in 2017, Green Energy Park has played a pivotal role in advancing Morocco’s renewable energy agenda. Located on an 8-hectare site in Benguérir, the center boasts state-of-the-art facilities and a team of about 50 specialists, including 20 researchers dedicated to solar technology. Backed by more than 200 million dirhams in funding, the facility has become a continental leader in applied solar energy research.
This proven expertise will now lay the foundation for tailored solutions that address Ivory Coast’s unique climate and economic challenges. The stakes are high: with accelerated industrialization underway, the country is banking on renewable energy to ensure equitable and sustainable access to electricity for its citizens.
This project aligns with Morocco’s broader strategy of promoting South-South partnerships. By forging stronger ties with countries like Ivory Coast, Morocco is cementing its leadership in clean technology and sustainable development across Africa.
Green Energy Park’s ongoing collaborations and research programs position it as a vital partner for African economies aiming to reduce their dependency on fossil fuels. The center’s cutting-edge initiatives and international partnerships underscore its role in Africa’s renewable energy transformation.
