Morocco's National Library set for major renovation after 17 years

Seventeen years after it first opened its doors, the National Library of the Kingdom is about to undergo a major overhaul. Following an international call for tenders issued in June, the renovation contract has been awarded to Bora Construction for a total of 39.15 million dirhams. The project will be overseen by the National Agency for Public Facilities, which is serving as the delegated project manager.

Designed by AEH, an architectural firm led by Anas Al Himdi, the renovation aims to transform the library into a world-class cultural hub. This modernization effort goes far beyond simple repairs; it will completely update the building from both a technical and functional standpoint, with a strong focus on accessibility, comfort, and safety.

Every part of the structure is set to be upgraded, from the foundational framework to the external finishes. Key areas including training spaces, laboratories, reading rooms, and consultation areas will be completely redesigned to meet new standards and better serve the public.

Since opening in 2008 in Rabat, the library has served a dual purpose: safeguarding Morocco’s documentary heritage while also acting as a vibrant cultural venue. It plays a crucial role in preserving the nation’s historical record, collecting and archiving documents tied to Morocco’s legacy. At the same time, it fosters knowledge-sharing through exhibitions, public talks, and other educational events.
