Morocco continues to strengthen its position in the telecommunications sector, reaching new milestones in mobile and internet penetration. According to the latest report from the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF), the country set fresh records in these areas by the end of 2024, further cementing its digital transformation.
The mobile phone market saw significant expansion, with the total number of subscribers rising to 58.3 million—an annual increase of 4.3%. This pushed the penetration rate to 158.3%, compared to 150.9% in 2023 and just 131.1% in 2019. The rapid growth reflects the widespread adoption of mobile technology, fueled by the increasing availability of multi-SIM options and the growing demand for digital services.
Internet access followed a similar trajectory, with a 5% increase in subscribers in 2024, building on a 7.6% rise the previous year. The total number of internet users now stands at 40.2 million, bringing the penetration rate to 109.2%, up from 103.4% in 2023 and 71.3% in 2019. This surge has been driven by the expansion of fiber-optic networks, the growing dominance of mobile broadband, and the ever-increasing reliance on online services.
While mobile and internet usage are booming, fixed-line telephony is experiencing more modest growth. The number of landline subscribers rose by 5.7% in 2024, following an 8.7% increase in 2023. Though demand remains steady—especially among businesses and government institutions—it lags far behind the dynamism seen in other segments.
These figures highlight Morocco’s ongoing digital shift, supported by greater access to telecom services and the increasing integration of digital tools into daily life. However, one major challenge remains: the rollout of 5G, which continues to be delayed. As infrastructure expands and demand surges, the introduction of this next-generation technology could be a game-changer for connectivity across the country.
With 2024 marking a pivotal year for Morocco’s telecom sector, the question now is whether this momentum will continue, bringing even greater innovation and broader coverage in the years ahead.
