Morocco’s UPF launches American institute with Arizona State University

In a groundbreaking move for higher education in Morocco, the Université Privée de Fès has officially launched its American International Institute, created in partnership with Arizona State University—one of the most highly regarded universities in the United States, especially known for its leadership in innovation. The new English-language institution aims to bring an American-style academic experience to Moroccan students, setting a national precedent with programs modeled on U.S. educational standards.

The initiative stems from a formal agreement signed on July 9, following three years of collaboration between Moroccan and American institutions. It establishes joint degree programs in fields such as international business, management, information sciences, and cybersecurity. Alongside traditional coursework, students will benefit from a dynamic mix of international modules, masterclasses, and student competitions, all designed to build cross-disciplinary expertise and foster a global mindset.

Mohamed Aziz Lahlou, President of UPF, welcomed the launch as a major milestone and a symbol of long-term academic cooperation. He emphasized that students enrolled in these programs will graduate with dual degrees—one Moroccan and one American. Two formats are available: a four-year undergraduate track, with three years in Fès followed by a final year at Arizona State University, or a master’s program split between the two institutions.

Brahim Akdim, Vice President of Innovation at UPF, noted that the partnership not only strengthens the university’s global ties but also places it within the broader Cintana Education network. This network spans over 32 universities across 26 countries and offers students broader access to international academic resources and recognition in both the Moroccan and American systems.

Representing the U.S. side, Susan Edgington, Director of Global Initiatives at Arizona State University, highlighted the value of this collaboration for Moroccan students. With degree pathways in software engineering and international business, graduates will earn qualifications recognized in the U.S., significantly enhancing their global career prospects.

Cintana Education President Rick Shangraw also announced that a permanent representative will be stationed in Fès to oversee the program’s implementation and ensure its success. He emphasized that this strategic move positions UPF as an integral part of a global academic ecosystem.
