Nabil Al-Arabi, the esteemed diplomat and former Secretary-General of the Arab League, passed away on Monday at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by the current Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who described it as “a significant loss for Arab diplomacy.”
A distinguished jurist, Al-Arabi served as Secretary-General of the Arab League from 2011 to 2016. Throughout his career, he held several key positions, including Egypt’s representative to the United Nations and a judge at the International Court of Justice. In 2011, he briefly served as Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. His extensive diplomatic career also saw him as Egypt’s ambassador to India (1981-1983) and as Egypt’s permanent representative in Geneva (1987-1991) and New York (1991-1999).
