With severe weather conditions expected across several regions, Morocco’s National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) has issued a strong warning urging the public to avoid all non-essential travel. In a statement released Tuesday, the agency advised drivers to postpone any unnecessary journeys until the weather improves, citing growing concerns over road safety.
The alert follows an orange-level weather advisory from the country’s meteorological service, which forecasts heavy rainstorms, snowfall, and powerful wind gusts in multiple provinces. Given the scale and intensity of the incoming weather, NARSA is calling for heightened caution, particularly from operators of passenger and freight transport. The agency stressed the importance of checking weather reports before embarking on any long-distance trips.
Adverse weather significantly increases the risk of road accidents, the agency reminded. In light of this, NARSA emphasized the need for drivers to strictly follow traffic laws and adapt their behavior to current conditions. Drivers are encouraged to carry out thorough checks on their vehicles, including tires, brakes, shock absorbers, windshield wipers, and other safety systems, to ensure they’re in optimal condition before hitting the road.
Driver fatigue was also flagged as a major risk factor. NARSA is urging motorists to take regular breaks in order to stay alert and maintain quick reaction times – an especially crucial precaution on winding, steep, or mountainous roads where hazards multiply under poor weather conditions. Speed limits should be reduced on such roads, and drivers should be extra cautious in dangerous zones.
Among the key safety tips shared: use weather-appropriate tires, maintain a safe following distance, avoid sudden maneuvers, and stay vigilant when overtaking or driving at night. The agency also reminded the public of the importance of civil responsibility during such times.
Ultimately, NARSA’s message is clear: responsible driving saves lives. Adhering to traffic laws isn’t just a personal obligation – it’s a collective responsibility that helps protect everyone on the road.
