Work has started on a 3km railway tunnel under Rabat as part of the high-speed rail extension to Marrakech. The tunnel will have two tracks and will connect the Oued Bouregreg area with Rabat Agdal station. The project will cost about 1.5bn dirhams ($150m).
The National Office of Railways (ONCF) is carrying out the work across three areas: the Bouregreg side, the central section and the Rabat Agdal station side. The three work fronts will allow different parts of the project to progress at the same time.
The tunnel is part of the planned high-speed rail line between Kenitra and Marrakech, which will also serve Rabat and Casablanca.
The existing Al Boraq service connects Tangier and Casablanca through Kenitra and Rabat. The new extension will take high-speed trains further south to Marrakech.
The project is being carried out under the slogan “Paving the way for transformation”.
