Small businesses in Morocco can now accept card payments using just a smartphone after Damane Payment launched a new SoftPOS solution. The service allows merchants and professionals to turn a compatible smartphone into a payment terminal, removing the need for separate payment hardware.
Damane Payment said the app is designed to make it easier for businesses to collect payments while offering fast and secure transactions.
The launch comes as more businesses around the world move towards smartphone-based payment systems.
SoftPOS, short for Software Point of Sale, lets merchants accept contactless card payments directly on their phones. Instead of buying a traditional payment terminal, businesses only need a compatible smartphone and the app.
The technology is growing quickly worldwide. Industry estimates suggest more than 34.5 million merchants could be using SoftPOS by 2027, up from around six million in 2022.
One reason for the growth is cost. Traditional payment terminals can cost between $150 and $600, not including maintenance fees. SoftPOS removes those hardware costs for businesses that already own a smartphone.
The rise of contactless payments is also helping drive adoption. Global contactless payment volumes are growing by more than 15% a year, according to industry figures.
In Morocco and across North Africa, cash is still used for more than 70% of daily transactions. But the country has one of the region’s highest smartphone adoption rates, with mobile subscriptions exceeding the size of the population.
Digital payments are also the largest part of Morocco’s fintech sector. The country’s financial inclusion strategy aims to bring more merchants into the digital economy and encourage electronic payments.
