OCP has taken a major step forward in its transition to clean energy, officially launching three new solar power plants to supply its mining operations. Announced on December 1 in Khouribga, the facilities have a combined peak capacity of 202 megawatts and are now fully operational across three sites: Benguerir (67 MW), Foum Tizi (30 MW), and Oulad Farès in Khouribga (105 MW). Together, they already meet a significant portion of the energy needs for OCP’s industrial activities.

With a capacity of 105 megawatts, the Oulad Farès plant is now the most powerful solar installation currently in operation in Morocco. These solar farms mark the first phase of OCP’s green electricity production strategy, led by its subsidiary OCP Green Energy. Launched in 2022, the company oversees the group’s broader renewable energy and storage development.

Energy from the new plants is delivered through grid connection agreements with the national electricity utility, enabling direct supply to OCP’s production sites. That power is used not just for mining but also to operate desalination plants run by Green Water and manufacturing units producing specialty fertilizers and crop solutions under the Nutricrops brand.

The total investment in this project reached nearly 1.8 billion dirhams, with the International Finance Corporation contributing 100 million euros. Germany’s KfW Development Bank also joined as a financial partner. At an estimated production cost of 368 dirhams per megawatt-hour, the initiative gives OCP a cost-effective and low-carbon advantage in the global fertilizer market.

Building and integrating solar infrastructure directly into active mining zones came with significant logistical challenges, acknowledged OCP Green Energy CEO Omar Kadir. He praised the dedication of the project teams and the close coordination with partners, noting the work was completed to international standards.

These new plants represent a pivotal milestone in OCP’s sustainability roadmap. The group plans to reach 1.2 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2027, with a target of exceeding 2 gigawatts by 2032. Ultimately, OCP aims to run its entire industrial ecosystem on 100 percent green energy and develop storage capacity of at least 2 GWh. This push is part of the company’s $13 billion green investment plan for 2023–2027, designed to help the group achieve full carbon neutrality by 2040.
