Orange alert issued in Morocco as mercury set to hit record highs

Starting Tuesday, much of Morocco will be gripped by an intense heatwave, with temperatures set to soar well above seasonal norms and peak toward the end of the week. The country’s national weather agency has issued warnings ahead of this prolonged episode of extreme heat, expected to last through Friday and blanket a wide stretch of the country.

The southern and southeastern regions are forecast to face the most punishing conditions, with temperatures ranging between 111 and 117 degrees Fahrenheit. Among the hardest-hit provinces will be Errachidia, Zagora, Taroudant, Tata, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Oued Eddahab, and Aousserd. Authorities have issued an orange alert for these areas, indicating a significant level of danger and urging residents to take precautions.

But the scorching conditions won’t be limited to the south. A broad belt of central and western provinces will also bake under relentless heat, with daytime highs climbing between 104 and 111 degrees Fahrenheit from Tuesday through Thursday. Affected areas include Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, Meknes, Khénifra, Fes, Moulay Yaacoub, Taounate, Taza, Ouezzane, Guelmim, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, Inezgane-Ait Melloul, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Benslimane, Khouribga, Settat, Chichaoua, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Essaouira, Marrakech, Rehamna, Khemisset, Sidi Bennour, and Youssoufia.

As the mercury continues to rise, officials are urging people across these regions to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during peak daylight hours, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. The coming days could bring serious challenges not only to public health but also to agriculture, energy consumption, and daily life in general.
