In the heart of Casablanca, the Pan-African Statistics Program II (PAS II) wrapped up two dynamic days of dialogue and brainstorming on how to revolutionize the communication of official statistics across Africa. This landmark event brought together over 60 experts from across the continent, united by a shared mission: to transform raw data into a cornerstone of transparency, governance, and social progress.
Organized under the collaborative umbrella of the European Union and African Union, the forum sought to rethink the way statistics are shared. The goal? Make data more accessible, digestible, and actionable—not just for policymakers, but for citizens as well.
Adoum Gagoloum, head of economic statistics at STATAFRIC, underscored the significance of the initiative: “Statistical communication is a shared responsibility. It plays a pivotal role in fostering transparency, enhancing governance, and driving social development.”
The discussions laid the groundwork for a forward-thinking action plan. Participants emphasized the urgent need to modernize communication tools, partner with experts in dissemination, and invest in tailored digital solutions. At the heart of these efforts is the vision of democratizing data access to empower decision-making and spark meaningful progress.
A recurring theme during the sessions was the importance of understanding user needs—from government officials to ordinary citizens. By placing people at the center, African statisticians aim to address key challenges: simplifying complex data, raising public awareness, and fostering a stronger statistical culture across the continent.
“The ideas and strategies developed here must translate into tangible actions that redefine the future of statistical communication in Africa,” said Gagoloum. He also called on National Statistics Institutes (NSIs) to collaborate actively in achieving this vision.
PAS II, in partnership with STATAFRIC, is committed to supporting African NSIs as they implement these recommendations. Simultaneously, the program will continue exploring innovative approaches to elevate the role of statistics as a driver of development.
Casablanca’s gathering represents a critical milestone in the journey towards an enlightened Africa—an Africa where data evolves from being a mere resource to a transformative force for governance, equality, and progress. By harnessing the power of statistics, the continent can map out a future defined by transparency, accountability, and opportunity for all.
