Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected as president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) during the organization’s 14th extraordinary general assembly held in Cairo on Wednesday. Running unopposed, he secured a second term that will extend his leadership until 2029, allowing him to continue the initiatives he first launched upon taking office in 2021.
His reappointment comes at a time when African football is striving to enhance its global competitiveness, improve governance, and attract more investment. The unanimous support from CAF’s member federations underscores the confidence in his leadership and the direction he has set for the organization.
The general assembly also saw the election of new members to CAF’s Executive Committee, along with six African representatives to FIFA’s Council. The presence of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, alongside top officials from African federations and other key figures in world football, highlighted the strategic significance of this gathering.
As he embarks on a second term, Motsepe faces several pressing challenges. A primary focus remains the development of African competitions to make them more appealing and competitive on the international stage. Governance and transparency within CAF also remain critical concerns, given the organization’s history of scrutiny in these areas. Additionally, securing greater investment and forging partnerships—particularly with major international corporations—will be crucial in ensuring the financial sustainability and growth of African football.
