Royal Air Maroc has started a new direct flight between Brussels and Tetouan to improve travel links between Morocco and Belgium.

The first flight left Brussels Airport at 12:15 on Friday and landed at Tetouan–Sania R’mel Airport. The route will run twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays.

A small reception took place at Brussels Airport before departure. Passengers included Moroccans living in Belgium and Belgians travelling to northern Morocco. The event was attended by Royal Air Maroc staff in Belgium, Morocco’s ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg Mohamed Ameur, and officials from Brussels Airport.

Ameur said the new route is important because it brings the two countries closer and makes it easier for Moroccans in Belgium to visit home, especially those from northern Morocco. He added that the flights should help tourism in the region and support business and cultural links.

Royal Air Maroc’s Benelux regional director, Mohamed Issam Mosseddaq, said the new route adds to the airline’s flights from Brussels to Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Nador and Tangier.

He said the airline wants to make travel between Morocco and Europe easier for Moroccans living abroad and for tourists from Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg who want to visit Tetouan and nearby cities.

The new flights are also expected to help Belgian travel agencies sell holiday packages to the region.

Before the launch, Royal Air Maroc ran a one-month advertising campaign in Brussels. This included posters in metro stations near Moroccan neighbourhoods, ads on trams and radio spots.
