Snow and storms set to hit Morocco this weekend

Heavy snow and intense rain are expected to sweep across Morocco this weekend, with weather authorities issuing alerts for several regions beginning Friday. According to the national meteorological service, the storm system is likely to bring significant precipitation lasting through Sunday morning.

In the central and southeastern parts of the country, particularly in the provinces of Midelt, Boulemane, Ouarzazate, and Tinghir, snowfall could accumulate between 12 and 20 inches. Other mountainous regions, including Ifrane, Khénifra, Béni Mellal, Azilal, Al Haouz, and Taroudant, are also likely to see fresh snow, ranging from 4 to 12 inches. The snow is expected to start falling at elevations above 5,600 feet.

At the same time, heavy rain—at times accompanied by thunderstorms—is forecast for numerous southern and central provinces. From midday Friday until early Saturday, areas such as Essaouira, Inezgane-Aït Melloul, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, Chtouka Aït Baha, Tiznit, Sidi Ifni, Guelmim, Tan-Tan, and Tarfaya could see rainfall totals between one and one and a half inches.

As the system shifts inland on Saturday, more provinces will be affected. From midnight to 6 p.m., up to two inches of rain could fall in Figuig, Boulemane, Errachidia, Zagora, Tinghir, Tata, and Midelt. Meanwhile, in northern coastal areas such as M’diq-Fnideq, Fahs-Anjra, Tangier-Assilah, and Tetouan, rainfall is expected to range between one and one and a half inches as well.

Authorities are urging residents in affected regions to remain cautious, especially in areas vulnerable to flooding or road disruptions caused by snow and slippery conditions.
