Morocco’s RS Berkane scored a late penalty to draw 1-1 with Sudan’s Al Hilal Omdurman in the first leg of their quarter-final in the CAF Champions League. The match was played at the Stade Municipal de Berkane.

Al Hilal went ahead early in the game. In the 13th minute, Abdelrazig Omer scored after a quick team move, giving the Sudanese side the lead. Berkane tried to respond but could not find a goal before half-time.

After the break, Berkane pushed forward more and created several chances. Al Hilal goalkeeper Issa Fofana Ouedraogo made a number of important saves, including stopping a header from Youssef Mahri. Berkane attackers Ayoub El Kaabi and Youssef Khairi also came close but could not score.

Berkane coach Moine Chaabani made a change in the second half, bringing on Hamza El Moussaoui for Abdelhak Assal to strengthen the defence.

The equaliser finally came deep into stoppage time. Berkane were awarded a penalty after Al Hilal defender Steven Ebuela fouled El Moussaoui in the box. Ebuela was sent off for the challenge.

Mounir Chouiar scored from the penalty spot to make it 1-1.

The second leg will take place on 22 March in Kigali, Rwanda, which is hosting Al Hilal’s home match.
