The Tanger Med port complex has wrapped up 2024 with remarkable performances and strategic advancements, solidifying its position as a key player in global maritime trade. With strong growth in traffic, major investments, and expanded services, Morocco’s flagship port continues to strengthen its role as a vital international logistics hub.

Tanger Med has surpassed the 10 million TEU mark, achieving an 18.8% increase in container traffic. This milestone aligns with an overall 16.2% rise in total cargo throughput, which reached 142 million tons. The TIR truck traffic also saw an 8.1% boost, while 600,872 new vehicles were handled, marking a 4% increase. Additionally, the number of vessel calls rose by 3.4%, reflecting the growing appeal of Tanger Med for major global shipping lines.

A total of 5.8 billion dirhams was invested in infrastructure, roadways, utility networks, and IT solutions to enhance the port’s efficiency. Meanwhile, the financial structure of Tanger Med remains solid, with a 4% reduction in debt, bringing it down to 9.2 billion dirhams, including 4.6 billion dirhams in bond loans.

Tanger Med has expanded its global reach by consolidating key maritime routes. The ME2 service now includes a second stop at Tanger Med, while new routes such as SAT, ETS, and SME, operated by Hapag-Lloyd and Arkas, are strengthening connections with West Africa. The port has also boosted its international presence by participating in major industry events, including Fruit Attraction in Madrid and the Port Authorities Roundtable in Barcelona.

In a drive for enhanced efficiency and security, Tanger Med continues to digitalize port operations. The secure, digitalized processing of bank transfer orders and the integration of Tanger Alliance into the port’s blockchain platform for container pick-ups illustrate this commitment. Additionally, an ambitious project leveraging Operational Technology (OT) data for infrastructure management is currently in development.

The port’s digital ambitions received further support through a memorandum of understanding with Bank of Africa, aimed at fostering technological collaboration and accelerating innovation within the port’s ecosystem.

With these milestones, Tanger Med reaffirms its status as a leading logistics hub in the Mediterranean and Africa. Its strategic focus on performance, connectivity, and technological innovation continues to set new industry benchmarks, ensuring its place at the forefront of global trade.
