Tanger has taken a major step forward in overhauling its public transportation network. This Sunday, 280 brand-new buses equipped with advanced onboard technology officially hit the streets, serving not only the city itself but also surrounding municipalities within the Al Boughaz intercommunal cooperation zone.
The launch was marked by a formal ceremony attended by Younes Tazi, the regional governor of Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, along with the regional council president, the mayor of Tangier, and several other local officials.
The fleet was commissioned by Tanja Mobilité, as part of a broader initiative to revamp how public transit is managed in the city. This rollout is aligned with a newly adopted delegated management model introduced by local authorities, aimed at modernizing and optimizing urban mobility.
On December 12, a ten-year contract to operate the city’s transit network was awarded to CTM-Transdev. Under this agreement, the public transportation system will undergo a complete transformation—from a full fleet replacement to the integration of cutting-edge digital tools. The plan also puts a strong focus on improving safety standards, accessibility, and service performance.
Beyond simply adding new buses, the project includes the construction of a dedicated depot and maintenance center. Several high-tech features are also being introduced to enhance the rider experience: a real-time passenger information system, smart ticketing, and driver support systems, all designed to make public transit in Tangier safer, more reliable, and significantly more user-friendly.
