Telecom giants receive green light for 5G networks in Morocco

Morocco is officially entering the 5G era. In a key meeting held Thursday in Rabat, the country’s Council of Government approved the rollout of fifth-generation mobile networks nationwide. The green light includes granting 5G licenses to Morocco’s three major telecom providers: Itissalat Al-Maghrib, Médi Telecom, and Wana Corporate.

Each operator received a formal decree detailing the terms and conditions under which they are authorized to establish and run their 5G infrastructure. These regulatory texts define not only the technical and operational standards expected of the companies but also set the legal framework for deploying the technology across the entire Moroccan territory.

This move follows a public tender process organized by Morocco’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT). The competition was conducted in strict alignment with existing postal and telecommunications regulations, and only after the approval of technical specifications by a government-appointed administrative committee. That committee was established back in July 2025 by executive order to oversee and structure the country’s digital transition.

The decrees themselves were presented by the Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform. At the end of the government meeting, government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas held a press conference where he laid out the specifics of the license allocation process and what it means for Morocco’s digital future.

With this decision, Morocco positions itself to join the global wave of countries embracing 5G, a move that could reshape connectivity, enhance digital services, and unlock new opportunities across multiple sectors of the economy.
