Hospitals and clinics will only be able to buy certain used and refurbished medical devices if they are no more than halfway through their expected lifespan under new rules from the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.
The new regulation says a used or refurbished medical device can only be registered for sale if, when the application is submitted, it has used no more than half of the total lifespan set by the manufacturer.
Devices with a lifespan measured in operating hours must also have used no more than half of the maximum operating hours set by the manufacturer.
The rules are part of Decision No. 630.26, signed by Health Minister Amine Tehraoui in March 2026 to implement Article 7 of Decree No. 2.14.607 under Law No. 84.12 on medical devices. The decision was published in the latest Official Gazette.
The regulation applies to used and refurbished medical devices listed under Section II-B and Section III of Article 4 of Law No. 84.12.
The approved equipment includes medical imaging devices such as interventional imaging systems, dental X-ray machines and nuclear medicine imaging systems.
External radiotherapy equipment, brachytherapy systems and radiosurgery equipment are also covered.
Every device must already have been registered in Morocco as new. It must also keep its original standards for quality, safety and performance, and its intended medical use must not have changed.
An annex to the decision lists the equipment covered by the rules. It includes X-ray machines, image-guided interventional X-ray systems, CT scanners, MRI scanners, gamma cameras and whole-body imaging systems.
The list also includes SPECT scanners, hybrid SPECT/CT systems, PET scanners, hybrid PET/CT systems and hybrid PET/MRI systems.
External radiotherapy equipment using ionising radiation, brachytherapy equipment and radiosurgery systems that use ionising radiation are also included.
