Walls that speak: Assilah’s summer of art and culture
Walls that speak: Assilah’s summer of art and culture

For more than fifty years, the ancient walls of Assilah have come alive each summer in a burst of color, transforming the town’s old medina into an open-air art gallery where contemporary creativity meets centuries-old stone. This annual transformation is the heartbeat of the International Cultural Moussem of Assilah, which this year celebrates its 46th edition, reaffirming the city’s place at the forefront of Morocco’s cultural landscape.

Running from June 29 to July 6, this summer’s edition brings together sixteen artists from Morocco and around the world, all invited to breathe new life into the city’s whitewashed walls. Armed with brushes, vivid colors, and complete artistic freedom, the participants turn the narrow alleyways into a living canvas. Every mural tells a unique story, shaped by the diverse inspirations, techniques, and visions of its creator.

Since its inception in 1978, the Moussem has built its identity around these murals, which have become its most recognizable symbol. While over the years the festival has expanded to include conferences, debates, and intellectual forums, the painted walls remain its beating heart—offering an artistic pulse that is both accessible and alive, drawing in locals and visitors alike.

One of the festival’s most cherished aspects is its dedication to nurturing young talent. Over time, children have been invited to leave their own creative mark on the city’s walls, planting the seeds of artistic expression from an early age. Many of these young participants have since pursued paths in the arts, journalism, or performance, carrying with them the spirit of the Moussem. This commitment to fostering creativity remains central to the festival’s philosophy.

The murals themselves stand out for their sheer variety—there are no themes, no stylistic constraints. Each artist is free to express their vision, creating an eclectic visual dialogue that enlivens every corner of the medina. This year’s works tackle a broad spectrum of ideas, from environmental conservation and reflections on recent events to the celebration of cultural heritage.

Wandering through the labyrinth of streets, passersby encounter pieces where calligraphy blends with figurative painting, abstract designs brush up against poetic landscapes. Each mural offers a moment of reflection, contemplation, or simple visual pleasure, all seamlessly woven into the daily life of a town steeped in history.

But the Moussem is more than just an art festival—it’s a crossroads where cultures, disciplines, and ideas intersect. Remaining true to its founding mission of fostering exchange, the event continues to be a space where visual art engages in dialogue with thought and debate. With each new edition, Assilah becomes, for a brief moment, a city where creativity takes center stage and the boundaries between art and life dissolve.
