UN Tourism to open first African innovation office in Rabat

Morocco has taken a significant step forward in its partnership with UN Tourism, signing a financial agreement to establish the organization’s first Africa-based innovation office in Rabat. The deal was finalized in Madrid, just ahead of the 123rd session of the UN Tourism Executive Council, set to take place this Friday in Spain.

The agreement, signed by Morocco’s Minister of Tourism, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, and UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, was formalized in the presence of Morocco’s ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich. It outlines the responsibilities of both parties and details the administrative arrangements tied to the new office. This follows a broader host country agreement reached between Morocco and the UN agency in January.

The new office will serve as a hub for innovation in African tourism, with a focus on advancing the UN Tourism 2030 Agenda across the continent. Its goal is to foster stronger collaboration among member states and to drive economic and social development in African destinations through innovative strategies and tools.

Morocco’s selection as the base for this initiative reflects its growing role as a continental leader in both tourism and digital transformation. The move aligns closely with King Mohammed VI’s broader vision of a united, cooperative Africa that leverages innovation to achieve inclusive growth.
