Morocco has started 2026 on a strong note in tourism, with millions of visitors choosing the country for their trips.

The country received more than 4.3 million international tourists between January and March, making it the top tourism destination in Africa during that period, according to a report by Travel and Tour World.

That puts Morocco ahead of Egypt and South Africa and reflects a wider recovery in travel across the continent.

The report says Morocco’s location close to Europe has helped attract visitors, along with new investment in airports, hotels and transport. Preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup are also seen as a factor boosting interest in the country.

Popular cities such as Marrakech, Agadir, Casablanca and Rabat all saw a rise in visitors. Most tourists came from the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Germany.

South Africa is still drawing visitors for safaris and wildlife tourism but is recovering more slowly after the pandemic. Egypt also continues to grow, supported by its historic sites and Red Sea resorts, although some disruption linked to regional tensions has affected travel.

The report also points to a change in travel habits, with more people choosing closer destinations with direct flights and fewer stopovers.
