Morocco's electricity production grows, but renewables falter

Morocco’s electricity production rose by 5.9% by the end of May 2025, according to the latest data from the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts. This growth was largely driven by a surge in private sector output, which jumped 8.4%, and a notable boost from the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water, whose production climbed 8% during the same period.

However, not all sources contributed positively. Facilities operating under Morocco’s renewable energy law (Law 13-09) saw a sharp decline, with production falling by 14.8%. This marks a significant reversal compared to the 42.1% growth recorded during the same period last year.

On the international front, electricity imports continued their upward trajectory, rising 8.7% in the first five months of 2025. This follows a 30% surge in imports during the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, electricity exports took a hit, dropping by 20.5%, as domestic demand kept climbing. Net called energy—a key indicator of internal consumption—grew by 5.7%, compared to 3.3% during the same stretch last year.

This pattern reflects a continued reliance on foreign energy sources to meet growing internal needs, even as local production—particularly from traditional and private sectors—makes gains. The decline in renewable output highlights ongoing volatility in the sector and the challenges of maintaining momentum in green energy development.
