Cash Plus has launched a QR code payment service designed to help small shops and independent traders accept digital payments across Morocco.
The service has been rolling out since January 2026. So far, more than 12,000 merchants around the country have signed up. Grocery stores, cafés, neighbourhood shops, service providers and independent sellers can now take payments by QR code without using a traditional payment terminal.
Instead of a card machine, merchants use a smartphone. Through the Cash Plus Mobile app, they generate a QR code which customers scan with their phones to pay.
The company says the system makes it easier for small businesses to accept digital payments. Merchants can receive money instantly, secure transactions and get easier access to financial services. Customers can pay quickly and simply from their phones.
Cash Plus plans to expand the service gradually across all regions of Morocco. The rollout relies on the company’s network of more than 5,200 agencies and nearly two million payment account holders.
The move focuses on Morocco’s neighbourhood retail sector, which plays a major role in daily life across cities and rural areas. The sector includes hundreds of thousands of small businesses.
Until now, many of these businesses have avoided digital payments because card machines are expensive and banks charge fees. QR code payments remove much of that barrier because merchants only need a smartphone, an internet connection and a printed or digital code.
The push for digital payments also fits into a national effort to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on cash. More than 90% of everyday transactions in Morocco are still made with cash.
The shift is part of the National Financial Inclusion Strategy led by Bank Al-Maghrib and the Ministry of Finance. The plan aims to move more financial activity into digital channels and bring people without bank accounts into the formal financial system.
Most QR code payment services also rely on the national mobile payment switch under the Maroc Pay label. This system allows a customer with a mobile wallet from any bank or payment provider to scan a merchant’s QR code and complete the payment.
Morocco’s financial sector has changed quickly since 2018, when regulators allowed non-bank payment institutions to operate. Companies like Cash Plus have since expanded beyond money transfers, turning their networks of agencies into platforms offering a wider range of digital financial services.
Cash Plus says the new QR code service is part of its plan to make financial services easier to access while helping small businesses move into digital payments.
