A scholarship programme run by the Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology has helped 148 of the country’s best science students continue their studies since 2010. Many have gone on to study at leading universities in Europe and North America.
The academy held its annual meeting for winners of the General Competition for Science and Technology (CGST) on July 28. The event brings together students who receive the academy’s excellence scholarship.
The scholarship pays for higher education up to PhD level as long as students keep excellent academic results.
The programme is part of a partnership between the Hassan II Academy and the Ministry of National Education. The agreement was signed in 2010 and renewed in 2014 and 2025.
Each year, the competition awards scholarships to four students from the mathematics stream and two students each from the physics, life and earth sciences, and engineering sciences streams.
The programme has supported 148 students over the past 15 years, including 104 men and 44 women. By May 2026, 52 scholarship recipients were still studying and meeting the programme’s academic requirements.
Many former recipients have earned places at some of the world’s top universities. Thirty-two students joined École Polytechnique in Paris, nine entered France’s Écoles Normales Supérieures and 14 went to institutions including CentraleSupélec and École des Ponts ParisTech.
Eleven scholarship recipients have completed PhDs, mainly at universities in North America. Another 15 are studying for doctorates at institutions including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, New York University, Université de Montréal, Université Paris-Saclay, École Polytechnique in Paris and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL).
Many graduates receive job offers from internationally recognised research laboratories before or soon after finishing their PhDs. Many also want to use their knowledge and research experience to support scientific progress in the country.
The academy also signed a cooperation agreement with Euromed University of Fez
