New car sales rose 15.7% in the first seven months of 2026, as electric vehicles and Chinese brands gained market share despite slower growth in July.

New car sales continued to grow in July, although at a slower pace than in recent months. A total of 20,738 new vehicles were sold during the month, up 5.2% from 19,713 in July 2025, according to the Association of Vehicle Importers in Morocco (AIVAM).

Sales reached 152,486 vehicles between January and July, a 15.7% increase from 131,739 during the same period last year.

The market has now grown for seven straight months after a record-breaking 2025, when 235,372 new vehicles were sold.

Growth, however, slowed in July. Sales increased by 5.2%, down from 16.7% in June, as comparisons with last year’s stronger sales became more difficult.

Passenger cars remained the biggest part of the market. Dealers sold 18,085 passenger cars in July, up 2.1% from a year earlier. June was still the strongest month of the year, with 24,649 passenger cars sold.

Passenger car registrations reached 134,887 units in the first seven months of the year, up 15.3% year-on-year. They made up 88.5% of all new vehicle sales, slightly lower than 88.7% at the end of June because light commercial vehicles grew faster.

Light commercial vehicles posted one of the strongest increases. Sales rose 32.3% to 2,653 units in July.

Registrations reached 17,599 units between January and July, up 19.5% from a year earlier. The segment accounted for 11.5% of total sales. These vehicles are widely used in transport, delivery, construction and other business activities.

Electric and hybrid vehicles also continued to gain popularity.

Electrified vehicles made up 17% of all passenger car registrations between January and July, compared with 10.5% during the same period last year.

A total of 22,963 electrified vehicles were registered, up 86.3% year-on-year. The figures include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), conventional hybrids, mild hybrids (MHEVs) and range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs).

Plug-in hybrid sales jumped 145% from a year earlier. Their share of the passenger car market rose from 2.5% to 5.3%.

Mild hybrid sales increased by 70.4%, with more than 4,000 vehicles sold since January.

Sales of fully electric vehicles almost doubled. A total of 1,213 battery electric vehicles were registered by the end of July, up 99.2% from a year earlier.

Another 1,402 range-extended electric vehicles were registered. Chinese carmakers account for most models in this category.

Together, BEVs and REEVs made up 1.9% of passenger car registrations.

Chinese brands also continued to expand their presence.

Twenty-one Chinese passenger car brands sold 15,161 vehicles between January and July. Their market share more than doubled to 11.2%, up from 5.1% a year earlier.

Sales climbed 151.8% from 6,021 units during the same period in 2025.

Chinese brands sold 2,013 passenger cars in July alone, making up 11.1% of monthly passenger car sales. That was up 62% from 1,243 vehicles sold in July 2025.

The growth was driven by more models entering the market, the arrival of new brands and a stronger focus on electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extended electric vehicles.
