The Fez Sports Complex will undergo a 2.8bn dirham ($280m) upgrade ahead of the 2030 World Cup. The National Agency for Public Facilities (ANEP) has launched an international tender for the project. SONARGES, the National Company for Stadium Management and Animation, is also involved.
The work will prepare the stadium to meet FIFA standards for the tournament, which will be hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
The stadium will have more than 45,000 seats after the upgrade. The project will replace seats, expand VIP and VVIP areas, improve media facilities and give fans better views of the pitch.
A new roof will cover all seating areas. The roof will help meet FIFA requirements for shade and lighting during matches and broadcasts.
The project also has a strong focus on the environment.
Solar energy systems, rainwater collection and greywater treatment will be added. Treated water will be used to irrigate the pitch.
The stadium is also expected to seek High Environmental Quality (HQE) certification for sustainable public infrastructure.
Construction companies will have to appoint an environmental certification officer and provide the staff and equipment needed to meet the environmental requirements.
Work on the site will also have to limit dust, noise and other disruption. Contractors will need plans for air quality, erosion, sediment and construction waste.
The work in Fez will also cover areas around the stadium. Plans include more parking, new transport facilities and better road links to the city centre and Fez-Saïss Airport.
