From February 22 to 26, 2025, Morocco will once again take center stage as it hosts the 49th General Assembly of FANAF (Federation of African National Insurance Companies) in the iconic city of Marrakech. Under the theme “Key Drivers for an Inclusive and Sustainable Insurance Development in Africa,” the event is poised to be a game-changer for the continent’s insurance and reinsurance industry.

Held under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and organized in collaboration with the Moroccan Insurance Federation (FMA), the assembly will bring together nearly 1,000 industry leaders and stakeholders from over 40 countries across Africa and beyond. The agenda? Tackling pressing challenges and unlocking opportunities to shape the future of African insurance.

Following the success of its first edition in Morocco in 2017, the country reaffirms its pivotal role in the African insurance ecosystem. Mohamed Hassan Bensalah, President of the FMA, expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the event once again:

“We are delighted to welcome this prestigious gathering to Morocco for the second time. This assembly provides an exceptional opportunity for South-South cooperation, fostering meaningful exchanges to explore growth avenues for the insurance industry across the continent.”

Echoing this sentiment, FANAF President César Ekomie Afene lauded Morocco’s insurance market as a benchmark for innovation and market penetration:

“Morocco’s dynamic insurance sector serves as an inspiring model, offering a solid foundation to strengthen South-South partnerships and realize our collective ambition of making insurance a cornerstone of inclusive and sustainable development in Africa.”

The assembly will kick off on February 24 with an opening ceremony, followed by an inaugural panel discussion on “The Role of Insurance and Reinsurance in Bridging the Protection Gap: Challenges and Opportunities in Africa.”

Throughout the event, key discussions will revolve around crucial topics such as:

  • Insurance’s contribution to Africa’s economic sustainability.
  • Accelerating innovation through regulatory frameworks.
  • Emerging regional trends in insurance products and services.

One of the highlights of this year’s edition will be the presentation of an in-depth study on women’s role in the insurance sector within the FANAF region. Conducted in collaboration with the World Bank, the findings are expected to provide valuable insights to promote greater inclusivity within the industry.

More than just a professional gathering, the FANAF General Assembly serves as a think tank for the future of African insurance. With Marrakech—known for its blend of tradition and modernity—as the backdrop, the event is set to be a catalyst for transformation, fostering new ideas and groundbreaking initiatives.

Back in 2017, Morocco made history by becoming the first non-CIMA (Inter-African Conference on Insurance Markets) country to host the event. This upcoming edition once again underscores the country’s strategic position in the insurance sector and its ability to unite global industry leaders around key issues.
