African football officials have confirmed their support for Gianni Infantino to continue as president of FIFA for the 2027 to 2031 term.
The decision was announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) during a meeting in Vancouver at the 76th FIFA Congress. CAF said all its member associations were in agreement.
The backing strengthens Infantino’s position ahead of the next election. Africa holds a large voting share in FIFA, and the support reflects approval of his development programmes, which have directed funding into football infrastructure across the continent.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin also signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Vancouver to increase cooperation between African and European football bodies.
The agreement covers coaching and technical exchange, social development through football, and support for smaller football associations to improve administration and finances.
CAF’s early endorsement of Infantino is seen as a strategic position ahead of the election. Africa’s voting bloc is expected to play a key role in FIFA decision-making on tournaments and funding.
Infantino has supported expanding the World Cup to 48 teams, which would increase Africa’s representation at the tournament.
The CAF UEFA agreement, referred to by officials as the “Vancouver Accord”, aims to reduce past disagreements between the two organisations, particularly over the international match calendar.
