The Central Market in Casablanca is set for a major renovation project worth about 33 million dirhams. Work is expected to start soon and last around one year.

The project will be managed by Casablanca Aménagement as part of efforts to improve central Casablanca while keeping its historic buildings intact.

The market, located on Mohammed V Boulevard, is one of the city’s best-known landmarks. It dates back to the early 1900s and is officially protected as a heritage site.

The renovation will include repairs to the building’s structure, roofs and waterproofing, as well as road and construction work around the site. Older steel parts of the building will also be restored.

Officials say the work is not just about fixing damage, but also about changing how the market is used. Shops will be reorganised, and there are plans to add new activities on the roof, possibly including food and service areas.

The project is part of a wider plan to improve Casablanca’s city centre, especially the historic Art Deco area shaped by French planner Henri Prost in the early 20th century. The market is also linked to architect Pierre Bousquet, who is associated with its original design.

Casablanca Aménagement is also working on other major projects in the city, including the Grand Theatre and the Arab League Park upgrade.

Other developments in the area include the expansion of the tram network and the ongoing renovation of nearby buildings such as Hotel Lincoln by REALITES.

The upgrades are part of Morocco’s wider plan to attract more tourists by improving cultural and historic sites and offering more modern visitor experiences.
