Four Moroccan police officers have died after a bus carrying security staff crashed on the way to a football match, authorities said.

In a statement, the General Directorate of National Security said the officers were part of a mobile public order unit based in Sidi Ifni. They were travelling to Agadir on Saturday morning to help secure a football competition when the accident happened.

Early reports say the bus, which was carrying 44 officers, overturned about 24 kilometres from Sidi Ifni.

Four officers were killed, according to an initial count. Another 26 were injured, including two who are in critical condition.

The head of the police service ordered officials in Agadir, along with the force’s medical and social teams, to closely follow the injured officers’ condition in hospital and make sure they receive all necessary care.

He also instructed that condolences and support be offered to the families of those who died.
