After 25 years, FRS ends historic Tarifa–Tangier ferry route

After 25 years of continuous service between Tarifa and Tangier City, ferry operator FRS Iberia Maroc / DFDS is officially ending this iconic route. The final crossing will take place on Sunday, May 4. As of the next day, none of the company’s vessels will run directly between the southern Spanish port and the heart of Tangier’s historic city.

This decision marks the close of a significant chapter that began a quarter of a century ago, when FRS launched a high-speed ferry to drastically shorten the journey across the Strait of Gibraltar. Over the years, more than 16 million travelers relied on this line, establishing FRS as a key player in cross-Mediterranean transportation and a vital link between Europe and Africa.

In its farewell message, the company extended heartfelt thanks to both cities, their local authorities, and the millions of loyal passengers who made the route a success. Despite this major change, FRS is not withdrawing entirely from the region. It will continue to operate from the nearby port of Algeciras, with ongoing connections to Tangier Med and Ceuta, ensuring its maritime network across the strait remains active.

FRS Iberia Maroc / DFDS emphasized that this move is part of a broader long-term strategy. The company says it remains committed to delivering high-quality service while looking ahead to new opportunities for growth and innovation.

Travelers affected by the route cancellation are encouraged to contact the company’s customer service or their booking agency for assistance with changes or further information.
