Moroccan Telecom operator inwi has cancelled February “Adsl Xtra” bills for its customers in Ksar El Kebir in a gesture of solidarity with residents affected by recent floods.

In text messages sent to clients, the company said the February bills “are cancelled for all our customers in the city”.

Residents of Ksar El Kebir were allowed to return to their homes on Thursday 19 February after nearly two weeks of evacuation. They had been forced to leave because of rising water levels in the Oued Loukkous and the floods that followed.

The crisis was part of a wider natural disaster that hit northern Morocco in the winter of 2010. Heavy and persistent rainfall caused several rivers to overflow. The Oued Loukkous, which runs through the Gharb plain and around Ksar El Kebir, was among the hardest hit.

By mid-February, floodwaters had reached a critical level. Entire residential areas and large stretches of farmland were submerged. Roads were cut off and thousands of people had to seek shelter in temporary centres or with relatives for about two weeks.

The Gharb region, often described as Morocco’s breadbasket, is low-lying and vulnerable to flooding. During this period, water levels were so high that local dams reached maximum capacity. Authorities carried out controlled water releases, which added pressure on downstream areas, including Ksar El Kebir.

Many residents had no access to their homes or internet connections during the peak of the crisis.
