Mobile networks in Morocco handled heavy demand during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with operator inwi recording the fastest overall performance, according to data from Ookla.

The tournament brought more than one million fans to stadiums across the country and produced a record 121 goals. It was also the first major test of Morocco’s 5G network after its national launch in November 2025.

Ookla said inwi achieved the fastest median download speeds in three of the five stadiums analysed. The highest speed was recorded at Al-Medina Stadium, where inwi reached 461.7 Mbps. The stadium’s overall average speed was 236 Mbps. At Rabat Olympic Stadium, inwi recorded 377.9 Mbps.

At Moulay El Hassan Stadium, Maroc Telecom delivered strong performance. Across all venues, inwi recorded the fastest web page loading times in four stadiums, with a best result of 1,284 milliseconds at Mohammed V Stadium. Orange recorded page loading times of up to 1,846 milliseconds at Al-Medina Stadium.

Video start times stayed below two seconds on all networks. The fastest result was 1,267 milliseconds at Moulay El Hassan Stadium. Messaging latency was lowest at Al-Medina Stadium at 36.9 milliseconds, while Mohammed V Stadium recorded video call latency of 74 milliseconds.

The tournament formed part of Morocco’s Digital Morocco 2030 strategy. The government has committed around 16.6 billion US dollars to telecoms and infrastructure upgrades linked to the 2030 World Cup.

The national target is to extend 5G coverage to 25% of the population by 2026 and 70% by 2030, with priority given to host cities. Telecom operators shared infrastructure and upgraded fibre networks to support large crowds at stadiums.

Investment also includes upgrades to airports, roads and rail networks to support travel between host cities. Hotels in Agadir and Marrakesh have upgraded Wi-Fi networks to meet demand from visitors and media.
