Banks are closing more branches as more people use online and mobile banking instead of visiting a local office. New figures from Bank Al Maghrib show the country had 5,550 bank branches at the end of 2025, down from 5,701 a year earlier.
Banks opened 29 new branches during the year but closed 180, leaving the network 151 branches smaller overall.
Most of the closures came from conventional banks. Their network fell from 5,486 branches in 2024 to 5,331 in 2025 after 25 openings and 180 closures.
Crédit Populaire du Maroc recorded the biggest cut. It closed 66 branches and opened one, leaving it with 1,269 branches.
Bank of Africa closed 43 branches, reducing its network from 636 to 593. Attijariwafa Bank closed 27 branches and opened two, taking its total from 929 to 904.
Société Générale Maroc reduced its network from 264 to 248 branches. BMCI cut its network from 250 to 236, while Crédit Agricole du Maroc went from 490 to 480 despite opening two new branches.
Some banks expanded instead.
Al Barid Bank added seven branches to reach 950, keeping the country’s largest branch network. CIH recorded the biggest growth among conventional banks, opening 13 branches without closing any. Its network grew to 346 branches.
Participatory banks also continued to grow. Their combined network increased from 206 to 210 branches after opening four new branches and closing none.
Bank Al Yousr opened two branches to reach 28. Al Akhdar Bank and Dar Al Amane each opened one, taking their totals to 26 and 20 respectively. Bank Assafa remained the largest participatory bank with 40 branches, while Umnia Bank had 53. The offshore banking sector stayed unchanged with nine branches.
Casablanca Settat remained the region with the most bank branches, with 1,559, despite losing 53 during the year. Rabat Salé Kénitra followed with 829 branches, ahead of Fès Meknès with 645, Tanger Tétouan Al Hoceima with 530 and the Oriental region with 493.
Bank Al Maghrib also measures banking coverage by comparing the number of adults with the number of bank branches. A lower figure means better access to banking services.
The Oriental region had the best coverage, with one branch for every 3,460 adults. Casablanca Settat followed with 3,681 adults per branch.
Draa Tafilalet had the lowest coverage, with one branch serving 7,870 adults. Marrakech Safi recorded 7,201 adults per branch, while Béni Mellal Khénifra had 6,567. The national average was 4,862 adults per branch.
