Moroccans living abroad can now send money straight into Banque Populaire bank accounts in Morocco within seconds after BCP Group and Western Union launched a new digital transfer service.

The new system connects Western Union directly to BCP’s banking network through an application programming interface (API). The companies said this means money is sent automatically, without the delays often seen with international bank transfers.

The service lets families in Morocco receive money directly into their Banque Populaire accounts instead of waiting several days or collecting cash from a branch.

Idriss Bensmail, BCP Group’s Managing Director of Retail Banking, said the launch is part of the bank’s open banking strategy. “This collaboration provides a modern and uninterrupted service for our clients and their loved ones.”

Western Union said the service builds on its long partnership with BCP and will make it easier for people to move money across borders.

Mohamed Touhami El Ouazzani, Regional President for Africa at Western Union, said: “Real-time connectivity helps our clients stay connected to global opportunities while strengthening financial links across borders.”

International bank transfers often pass through several banking systems before reaching the recipient. That can take several days.

The new platform removes those extra steps. When someone sends money through Western Union, the system automatically checks the transaction, carries out identity and regulatory checks, and deposits the money directly into the recipient’s Banque Populaire account.

The automated process also reduces manual errors and combines Western Union’s security standards with BCP’s banking security systems.

BCP said the project is part of its wider open banking plan, which allows its banking systems to connect securely with other financial companies. The two partners said the platform could also support more cross-border payment services in the future.

BCP Group operates in 32 countries, including 18 in Africa, and is one of Morocco’s biggest banking groups.

Western Union has been providing international money transfer services for more than 175 years and operates in more than 200 countries and territories.
