A powerful swell is set to hit Morocco’s coastline starting Monday afternoon, according to an alert from the Ministry of Equipment and Water. Massive waves, ranging from 4 to 6.5 meters high, are expected, with intervals of 10 to 14 seconds. The affected areas include the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic coast between Cap Spartel and Tarfaya, with the most intense conditions forecast between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
The most concerning forecasts focus on the Strait of Gibraltar, particularly between Tanger-Med and Cap Spartel, as well as the coastal zone stretching from Cap Spartel to Cap Hadid. Strong southwesterly winds will further complicate the situation, especially between Cap Spartel and Essaouira from Monday morning onward, before reaching the strait in the evening.
High tides, ranging from 3.2 to 3.8 meters, will occur at critical times—early in the morning between 4:30 and 5:20 a.m., and again in the late afternoon between 4:50 and 5:30 p.m.—increasing the risk of localized flooding.
Authorities are urging fishermen, boaters, and maritime transport professionals to exercise extreme caution. Going out to sea is strongly discouraged until conditions improve, which is expected by Tuesday afternoon. Coastal residents are also advised to remain vigilant, particularly in areas vulnerable to strong waves and high tides.
The ministry has stated that additional alerts will be issued as the situation develops. For now, the message is clear: avoid high-risk coastal areas and stay updated on weather advisories.
