Morocco has clinched the top spot with remarkable distinction at the 31st edition of the African Mathematics Olympiad, held at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 10 to 20, 2024. This outstanding victory highlights the excellence of mathematics education in Morocco and the exceptional talent of its young mathematicians.
The national team scored an unprecedented 201 points, according to the deliberations of the scientific committee. “This total is a record that has never been reached by any country in the history of the Olympiad,” noted a statement from the Ministry of National Education. Following Morocco, Algeria secured second place with 186 points, while Tunisia came in third with 133 points.
In terms of medals, the Moroccan competitors earned 3 gold medals and 3 silver medals, distributed among the team members.
Gold medalists:
- Yassine Kemmouh (42/42 points, perfect score) from the Casablanca-Settat region
- Adam Mahdan (35/42 points) from the Souss-Massa region
- Sami Moussaoui (33/42 points) from the Oriental region
Silver medalists:
- Sara El Messnaoui (31/42 points) from the Casablanca-Settat region
- Soukaina El Branssi (30/42 points) from the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region
- Lina Chaker (30/42 points) from the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region
Each of these three female competitors also won a gold medal in the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) Girls category.
The 31st edition of the African Mathematics Olympiad saw the participation of 27 countries, each represented by a team of six competitors (three girls and three boys). The participants faced two challenging exams over two consecutive days, each lasting four and a half hours.
In its statement, the Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports congratulated the students who brought honor to Morocco at this scientific event, as well as the mentors who guided their preparation for this continental competition.
The department led by Chakib Benmoussa also extended thanks to the families of these students for their support and encouragement in the pursuit of excellence and success, offering best wishes for continued achievements in future editions and in their academic and professional journeys.
