Mystery guests will now determine hotel rankings in Morocco, as the country introduces stricter quality controls and standards.

The number of overnight stays in classified tourist accommodations in Morocco surpassed 2.04 million by the end of January 2025, marking a 16% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Tourism Observatory.

This growth was driven by both domestic and international tourism, with local overnight stays rising by 6% and those from international visitors climbing by 20%, the report noted.

Several key destinations recorded strong performances compared to January 2024. The Al Haouz region saw a remarkable 48% increase in overnight stays, followed by Fès (+35%), Tangier (+30%), Casablanca (+29%), Essaouira (+15%), and Agadir (+14%).

Tourism also generated significant foreign currency revenue. By the end of January 2025, travel receipts from non-resident visitors in Morocco reached 8.78 billion dirhams, up from approximately 7.98 billion dirhams a year earlier—a 10% increase.

Meanwhile, tourist arrivals at border checkpoints saw a sharp rise, with 1,265,197 visitors entering the country in January, reflecting a 27% increase compared to the same month in 2024.
