Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez publicly thanked Morocco for its support in helping restore power to parts of Spain after a major blackout swept across the country early Monday. Speaking on national television, Sanchez confirmed that electricity had been partially restored in some northern and southern regions, thanks in large part to energy connections with both Morocco and France.
The Prime Minister extended his gratitude to both neighboring countries for stepping in during what he called a critical moment. However, he also admitted that investigators still have no clear explanation for the widespread outage, which disrupted power across the entire Iberian Peninsula.
In response to the severity of the situation, the Spanish government swiftly activated an emergency task force. Officials overseeing the national power grid estimate that it could take anywhere from six to ten hours from the initial outage—reported around 10:30 a.m. GMT—for full service to be restored.
