The United States has opened a new Consulate General in Casablanca Finance City. The project cost more than $350m and marks 250 years of relations between the two countries.

The new site covers 2.7 hectares and is ten times bigger than the old consulate on Boulevard Moulay Youssef. The building mixes American design with Moroccan style.

Royal Adviser Fouad Ali El Himma, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Consul General Marissa Scott attended the opening.

US officials repeated support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and called the autonomy plan “the only solution”.

The consulate is located in Casablanca Finance City, Morocco’s main business hub. It is meant to support trade, investment, technology links and consular services.

The opening comes as US companies look to spread their supply chains. Morocco has the only free trade agreement between the United States and an African country. Officials say the new site will help grow business and financial ties.

The project also reflects security cooperation. Morocco is a major non-NATO ally and hosts the African Lion military exercise every year. The new site will help coordination on counter-terrorism and intelligence sharing in North Africa and the Sahel.

The opening follows the Abraham Accords. Morocco is seen as a regional mediator. The consulate is expected to support cooperation between the United States, Morocco, Israel, Gulf countries and Europe.

The complex uses energy-efficient technology and shows artworks that highlight cultural ties. It will also expand education and entrepreneurship programmes for Moroccan youth.
