Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across several regions of Morocco between Wednesday and Thursday, bringing heavy rain, bursts of hail, and powerful wind gusts. The country’s national meteorological agency has issued warnings about a strong wind event that could also whip up large clouds of dust, reducing visibility and complicating travel conditions.
On Thursday, storm cells are forecast to dump up to 50 millimeters of rain in just a few hours across the provinces of Tinghir, Errachidia, Ouarzazate, Midelt, and Zagora. These intense weather conditions are expected to strike between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m., and have triggered an orange-level alert due to the risk of flooding and other storm-related hazards.
The first signs of the system will begin to take shape as early as Wednesday afternoon. Strong winds are set to hit parts of eastern and southeastern Morocco, with gusts ranging between 75 and 90 kilometers per hour. The affected areas include Figuig, Jerada, Boulemane, Errachidia, Midelt, and Tinghir, where the winds will peak between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The turbulent weather will persist into Thursday, stretching from daybreak until midnight. This second wave is expected to impact a wide swath of the country, from the Oriental region to the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. Provinces on alert include Jerada, Taourirt, Figuig, Oujda-Angad, Guercif, Boulemane, Azilal, Al Haouz, Errachidia, Tinghir, Midelt, and Ouarzazate. Authorities are urging residents and travelers in these regions to remain cautious and monitor updates as the situation evolves.
